How to Find the Right Photographer for Your Next Shoot

Not all photographers are the same. Here's exactly what to look for, from portfolio style to pricing, so you hire the right creative every time.

Hiring a photographer can feel overwhelming. With so many talented creatives out there, how do you know who's the right fit for your vision, budget, and schedule? This guide walks you through exactly what to look for.

1. Know Your Style. Or Find Someone Who Can Help You Define It.

Sometimes you already know exactly what you want. You've had great photos done before, you have reference images you love, or you've built a brand with a clear visual identity and you need a photographer who can match it. That's a great place to start.

But if you're not sure? That's okay too, especially for branding work.

A great photographer isn't just there to press a shutter. They can help you develop your visual identity based on who you are, what you do, and who you're trying to reach. Ask potential photographers:

  • Do you have experience with personal branding or commercial shoots?
  • Can you help guide the look and feel of the session?
  • Do you do a pre-shoot consultation to understand my goals?

If you do have a strong visual reference, spend a few minutes pulling together examples from Pinterest, Instagram, or past photos you love. The clearer you can communicate what you're drawn to, the better.

2. Review Their Portfolio Critically

Look beyond their best shots. Ask yourself:

  • Is the quality consistent across their work, or are there a few standout shots surrounded by mediocre ones?
  • Do they shoot in conditions similar to yours (outdoor, indoor, golden hour, studio)?
  • Can you see them shooting your type of session, whether wedding, portrait, commercial, or family?

3. Check Reviews and References

A great portfolio means they're talented. Reviews tell you if they're professional, communicative, and easy to work with, which matters just as much.

Look for specifics in reviews: "responded same day," "made us feel comfortable," "delivered on time." Vague 5-star reviews with no detail are less meaningful.

4. Understand Their Pricing Model

Photographers typically structure their pricing in a few different ways, and many use a combination:

  • Hourly rate: you pay for the time spent shooting; more commonly used for event photography
  • Session fee: a flat rate for a defined session; images are often sold separately, though some photographers include an image credit or a set number of edited images
  • Packages / collections: bundled pricing where you get more value by buying together; increasingly common across all types of photography, not just weddings
  • Combination: many photographers charge a session fee plus offer images à la carte or in packages

Always ask what's included: editing, image rights, turnaround time, and how images are delivered.

5. Have a Real Conversation, Not Just a Price Check

The best thing you can do before booking is get on a call. Not to ask "what do you charge?" but to actually talk.

  • Share what you're trying to accomplish
  • Get a feel for their personality and communication style
  • Ask how they'd approach your specific session
  • Let them ask you questions. A good photographer will want to understand your goals before quoting anything.

Pricing, products, and deliverables are much easier to understand in a real conversation than over email. You'll also quickly get a sense of whether this person gets you and whether you'd be comfortable spending hours with them.

Don't just call to ask for a price. Give the photographer the context they need to give you the right answer, and to make sure they're even the right fit for what you need.

6. Look at Their Specialties

A brilliant wedding photographer may struggle with product photography. A commercial photographer may not have the patience for a toddler's family session. Make sure their specialty matches your need, and don't be afraid to ask directly what types of shoots they love most.

Finding the right photographer takes a little research, but it's worth it. When the fit is right, the photos will show it.
