How to Get More 5-Star Reviews
Reviews are currency in the creative industry. Learn proven strategies to encourage more 5-star reviews and build your reputation.
Deliver Exceptional Service
The foundation of 5-star reviews is delivering what you promised—and then some.
Set Clear Expectations From your first conversation, be transparent about:
- What's included in the session
- Timeline for deliverables
- How many edited images they'll receive
- Any limitations or restrictions
When clients know exactly what to expect and you deliver it, they're happy.
Exceed Expectations When Possible Think about what you can do to give more than expected. And, we don't mean give more photos or products, rather what can you offer that sets you apart? Do you have snacks during the session? Do you bring cold water to a location shoot? Etc. Small gestures create raving fans.
Communicate Proactively If something changes (weather, timing, deliverables), communicate it immediately. Radio silence kills reviews.
Timing Matters
Don't ask for reviews too early. Ask when:
- They've received their final deliverables
- They've had time to see and love the photos
- They're still excited about the experience (but not so late they've forgotten)
Sweet Spot: 1-2 days after they receive their final images.
Make It Easy to Leave a Review
Direct Links: Send a direct link to your review page (not "Google my name and find reviews").
Multiple Platforms: Many clients prefer different platforms. Make it easy on YouTube, Google, and your website.
One-Click Option: If possible, use a review widget that requires minimal effort.
Mobile-Friendly: Ensure the review process works perfectly on phones.
The Ask
Be direct and appreciative:
"Hi [Name], we absolutely loved working with you on your session. If you enjoyed your experience, we'd be so grateful if you could take 2 minutes to leave a review [HERE]. Thank you!"
Make it about them doing you a small favor, not a big ask.
Respond to Every Review
This is crucial. Reply to every review—5-star and otherwise.
To 5-Star Reviews: Thank them warmly, mention something specific about working with them, and invite them back.
To Lower Reviews: Be professional, address their concern, and offer to make it right. Never get defensive.
Public responses to reviews are seen by potential clients. Handle them with grace.
Guide Them Toward 5-Stars
When you ask for a review, make it clear what you're asking for:
"We'd love if you could share your experience with a 5-star review and let others know what you loved most about your session."
Being direct about 5-stars isn't pushy—it's clear.
Follow-Up Strategy
Send a follow-up email a week after your first ask if they haven't left a review:
"We haven't heard from you yet, but no pressure! Here's that review link again if you get a moment. [LINK]"
One gentle reminder is fine. Don't be aggressive.
Showcase Reviews Everywhere
Once you have reviews, use them:
- Feature them on your website
- Share testimonials on social media
- Quote reviews in your portfolio
- Include them in your LocalFocal profile
Social proof drives more bookings, which means more opportunities for reviews.
Why People Don't Leave Reviews
They're Busy Life gets in the way. Make it ridiculously easy (direct link, 60 seconds to complete).
They Assume You're Too Successful to Need It Disabuse them of this. Let them know reviews matter to your business.
They Don't Know Where to Review Tell them exactly where. Don't make them figure it out.
They Didn't Think About It A gentle reminder in their inbox brings it back to mind.
The Long Game
Building a strong review reputation takes time, but it compounds. 50 5-star reviews is a powerful marketing tool that attracts more clients, which creates more opportunities for reviews.
Focus on great service first. Reviews follow naturally.
