Why Getting Tagged in 'In Search of a Photographer' Posts Rarely Leads to Getting Booked
You got tagged. Again. Now you're refreshing the thread, watching a dozen other photographers jump in, and wondering if the person even picked someone yet. It can work, but there's a much better way.
You got tagged. Again. Now what?
You're in the middle of editing a session. Your phone buzzes. Someone tagged you in a Facebook group post: "In search of a photographer for a family session next month!"
And so begins the cycle.
You drop what you're doing, click over, and post a comment. Then you check back twenty minutes later to see if they responded. They didn't, but eleven other photographers did. You check again an hour later. Still nothing. You private message them. Maybe they see it. Maybe they don't. Maybe they already messaged the first person who commented and just forgot to update the thread.
You never hear back. You move on. Then it happens again tomorrow.
If this sounds familiar, you're not alone and you're not doing anything wrong. It can work. Occasionally someone finds their next great client this way. But as a strategy? The odds are rarely in your favor.
Why the Tag Thread Feels Like It's Wasting Your Time
Here's the thing: the people tagging you genuinely mean well. They know you, they think of you, and they want to help. That part is real.
But the format itself creates friction that nobody intends:
For you, the photographer:
- You have maybe a 10-minute window before the thread gets crowded
- You scramble to post something meaningful in a comments section that's already chaotic
- You have no idea what the person's budget is, what they're actually looking for, or whether they're serious
- You're not just competing with established photographers willing to undercut you. You're also up against people who just bought their first camera, are looking for experience, and genuinely have no idea how to price themselves. They're not necessarily trying to undercut you; they just don't know what they don't know yet.
- The person posting isn't comparing apples to apples. They're seeing tags from someone who shot their first session last month right alongside someone with 20 years of experience and a thriving business, with no context to tell the difference.
- You spend the next 24–48 hours checking back to see if anyone responded, if a decision was made, if you were even considered
- Most of the time: nothing. The person either picked someone through DM, gave up, or just... disappeared
It's Not Great for the Person Looking, Either
Let's be honest: the experience on the other side isn't much better.
Someone posts looking for a photographer and suddenly they have 30 comments, 15 DMs, and zero way to compare any of it. No pricing. No portfolio in front of them. Just a flood of "Check your DMs!" and links to Instagram pages they have to individually click through.
It's overwhelming. So they either pick whoever responded first, pick whoever a friend vouched for, or get so overwhelmed they just go with someone. Anyone. Not because that person was the best fit, but because the process became exhausting.
And here's the part nobody says out loud: that's not a great outcome for the photographer who gets chosen that way either. If the client didn't really vet you, didn't look at your portfolio, didn't understand your pricing, didn't connect with your style, the expectations going in may not match reality. That's a recipe for a session that feels off, even if nothing technically went wrong.
The tag thread doesn't serve anyone particularly well. It just feels like it should.
What You're Actually Competing For
When you jump into one of those threads, here's the honest reality of what you're competing for:
- An unknown budget (often lower than yours)
- A client who has no context for your work or your value
- In a format where a newcomer with a kit lens looks the same as a seasoned professional
- With no guarantee the person is even still looking
You're not being evaluated on the quality of your work. You're being evaluated on how fast you commented and how good your one-liner pitch sounds in a crowded thread.
That's not how great photographers build great businesses.
The Mental Load Nobody Talks About
Beyond the time, there's the mental drain.
Checking back on threads. Wondering if you got passed over. Watching someone with half your experience land the job because they commented first or charged less. Feeling that low-grade discouragement that builds over time when you're constantly throwing effort into a void and not knowing why it's not converting.
Your energy is your most valuable business asset. Spending it refreshing Facebook threads is not a strategy. It's a slow leak.
There's a Better Way to Be Found
What actually works is making yourself easy to find before someone even thinks to post in a group.
When a potential client can:
- Browse your full portfolio
- See your pricing upfront
- Read reviews from real past clients
- Send you a direct inquiry in seconds
...they don't need to post in a group at all. They find you, they like what they see, and they reach out. No tag wars. No comment scramble. No ghosting.
That's what LocalFocal is built for.
Your profile works while you're on a shoot. While you're editing. While you're sleeping. Clients in your area can find you, see your work, and reach out without you lifting a finger in the moment.
Your Time Is Worth More Than a Facebook Thread
Every hour you spend monitoring group posts, crafting comments, chasing DMs, and wondering if you got the job is an hour you're not spending on the work that actually builds your business.
